Indonesian Independence Day 2015 – Traditional Games

There are many ways how Indonesian celebrates the Independence day of the country which falls on every August, the 17th. Formal institutions such as government departments and schools usually have formal flag ceremony in the morning, followed by traditional games. One of the most popular games is the competition in putting pencil into bottle (lomba memasukkan pensil dalam botol) – which we decided to play on that happy day.

During the 1990s, this game was mainly held for children of age range 7 to 17 years old. However, as the time passed by, it is now often played by adults too. The rules are simple: a pencil will be rope-tied on each participant’s body, he/she shall run and put the pencil into a bottle at the other side of the hall without the help of the hand – the quickest will be the winner.

(1) participants were getting ready to run

(2) reached the bottle; pencil please get into the bottle!

(3) got it; running back to the starting/finish line

(4) Congratulation, WINNERS!

This game intended to improve concentration and patience. It taught kids about fair play as they will be disqualified for breaking rules. But most importantly, the FUN!
